Finding Sisters at Devil’s Thumb Ranch
When I left New Jersey for Devil’s Thumb Ranch, I didn’t know what to expect but I did know I needed to go. I’ve always loved horses, and Colorado has long called to me. Though I’d never been, something inside whispered: Go. And so I did. I thought it would be awesome to ride horses for four days and maybe meet some cool people… But wow was I thrown when I arrived.
This year, after an engagement ending, being involved in a real estate nightmare and navigating life with multiple sclerosis has been emotionally and physically challenging. I sought connection—with nature, with horses, with others, with something bigger than myself. Four days ago, I walked in and met six strangers. Today, I lleft with six sisters. Women who inspired me, who lifted me, and who reminded me of the fierce strength and gentleness that lives inside each of us.
What touched me most was the kindness and patience I received from these women. When it took me longer to do things, nobody rushed me. Instead, I was met with warmth, understanding, and encouragement. That’s real empowerment: people who fuel your flame even when it flickers. When you find those women, keep them, protect them, and nurture that bond. Because it’s rare. And it’s magical.
A truly powerful thread throughout this experience was the connection with horses. Devon Combs who runs Unbridled Retreats knows that horses are not just part of the scenery; they are co‑facilitators of transformation. These intuitive beings mirror our emotions, reflecting back who we really are far beyond what we portray we should be. They offer honest, nonjudgmental feedback: a nuzzle of affirmation when we show up as our true selves, or a gentle disconnection when we cocoon ourselves in fear.
Together, the horses and the women held space for one another and I know I felt seen, grounded, and deeply present. Their energy, along with the mountains and the cool Colorado air helped me trust my intuition, live in the moment, and reconnect with joy. The synergy Devon fosters with her equine partners is nothing short of magic.
This experience wasn’t about fitting a mold or meeting expectations… it was about being seen, being supported, and being set free to rediscover yourself. I am leaving with a full heart, profound gratitude, and a renewed belief in the healing power of sisterhood and quiet equine wisdom.
